La canción más representativa de George Harrison
Fue escrita en diciembre de 1969, cuando Harrison y Billy Preston
estaban en Copenhague, de gira con Delaney and Bonnie
Antes de grabarla para él , George se la dio a Billy Preston haciendo también la producción
La canción estaba programada para ser lanzada como single en Septiembre de 1970.
En octubre 1970, Harrison dijo a la prensa inglesa que iba a ser su primer sencillo como solista,
pero unos días más tarde cambió de opinión y dijo que no lo lanzaría,
pues no quería restar ventas al álbum.
(Los otros tres Beatles también habían lanzado álbumes en solitario a principios de ese año,
sin lanzar ningún single en Gran Bretaña).
Finalmente la canción fue lanzada como single en Estados Unidos el 23 de noviembre de 1970.
Unas semanas después ante las peticiones de los fans ingleses
se lanzó también en Inglaterra: el 15 de enero de 1971.
En USA la cara B fue «Isn’t It a Pity»
Y en Inglaterra: «What Is Life»
La canción llegó al número uno tanto en Estados Unidos como en Inglaterra.
En Inglaterra, entró directamente al número siete y desde ahí fue directo al número 1..’
Demanda de plagio.
Una compañía de Nueva York, Bright Tunes,
demandó a George Harrison por plagio musical.
Durante el juicio, expertos musicales intentaron explicar
que la melodía de «My Sweet Lord» era muy similar a la de «He’s So Fine»,
compuesta por Ronald Mack lanzado en 1962 por The Chiffons.
Finalmente Harrison fue multado por plagio inconsciente.
El ex gerente de Allen Klein, que anteriormente había apoyado a Harrison,
se convirtió en el propietario de Bright Tunes, poco después
Las Chiffons grabarían «My Sweet Lord»
para capitalizar la publicidad generada por la demanda.
